Llyn Idwal, the best engagement session spot in North Wales

The best engagement location in North Wales

Dewi/Bear here. So a few weeks back I did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on instagram stories. Nothing too fancy, but I had a question from one of my couples about where my favourite location to photograph is. Usually I would have said that I don’t really have one. I’m usually someone who gets really excited about working in new places and I like to think that I thrive when faced with new challenges. It keeps me excited about what I’m doing and keeps the photography fresh. But when asked where the best place to photograph in North Wales is, I answered without hesitation. Llyn Idwal is hands down, the best engagement, pre-wedding location in North Wales.

Ha yeah I know that’s hyperbolic. But I honestly think this is one of the best, if not the best spot around. I have a friend who lives in Bethesda and it’s always such a joy to drive from my house to his (when that was allowed). The journey along the A5 between Betws y Coed and Bethesda is just beautiful. Views of the best mountain range, and my personal favourite, Tryfan. And just after this imposing mountain, you can park up, and enjoy an easy walk, up to a beautiful mountain lake and take in the stunning surroundings. There is no shortage of stunning views to photograph up here, and there is always something new to see. It also looks incredible in any weather and any season, handy when faced with the temperamental Welsh weather.

Llyn Idwal is also on the flight path for some of the incredible RAF planes, which if you are a bit of a plane nerd like me, is always an added joy.

Mountain ponies and dog walks

So when Rebecca and Tom asked for suggestions on where to meet for their engagement session there was no other answer. Off into the mountains we went. Funnily enough, despite having been up here countless times, this was the first time I had seen the wild ponies. What a treat! It’s about a 40 minute walk up to the lake, which is the perfect amount of time for a pre-wedding shoot, enjoying the views and capturing some awesome photos along the way. And it’s dog friendly too! I always love to meet the doggos and Copper was definitely a good boy.

With the end of lockdown in sight, I am SO excited to get back to working. We have a few engagement sessions coming up and you can be sure there’ll be another trip up to Llyn Idwal real soon. During the summer lockdown I also start walking a lot with the cub and I’m thinking this will be the perfect spot to go on a daddy daughter adventure. Keep an eye on our instagram stories for that update.
